Grant and I got engaged in August 2019, (Engagement story here) before we even knew what COVID-19 was.
My mom, dad, sister, and I went to Dallas, Texas in November 2019 to look for my wedding dress.
We went to Dallas to go wedding dress shopping for a couple of reasons: 1. we LOVE Dallas, it’s our favorite place to visit. 2. Dallas has a lot more options than Jackson, Mississippi does! and 3. I found my debutante dress in Dallas, so part of me was thinking I would have the same luck.
When I started looking for wedding dresses, I had no idea what I wanted.
I had originally thought I wanted to alter my mom’s dress and wear it. However, after looking at it with a professional tailor, the way her dress was constructed, wouldn’t have been easy to alter for me.
From the beginning, I had this vision of how beautiful my mom looked on her wedding day and I wanted to look as much like her as I could!
We had 2 appointments set. The first one at the Nordstrom Wedding Suite and the second at the Neiman Marcus Bridal Suite.
Here are a couple of dresses that didn’t make the cut:
This is the dress I was so torn between and looking back, I don’t know what I was thinking lol! I loved that the bolero came off and the picture below is without! Such a beautiful and unique dress.
My dress was the last one I tried on while we were at Nordstrom and honestly, I don’t remember a “this is the one” moment. I remember it felt comfortable and I loved the more A-line cut.
After leaving our second appointment at Neiman Marcus, I couldn’t stop thinking about the last dress I had tried on at Nordstrom and knew it had to be the one– it was also everyone’s favorite!
Several months, and in the midst of a pandemic later…
They told us it would be about 5 months before they could get my dress in, and we would to go back to Dallas and pick it up.
In May 2020, we still hadn’t heard anything about my dress arriving at the suite so we contacted all sorts of people in various departments only to find out that the Dallas Nordstrom Wedding Suite was closed.
Out of business.
To be no more.
We eventually got a hold of a nice woman who told us how lucky we were that my dress came in because many of their dress orders had been canceled due to their closing.
Since they were completely closed for business, that included their alterations too. Which, we had originally planned on using.
Thankfully, the very sweet ladies at The Bridal Path in Jackson (my hometown) were able to help with alterations and did an amazing job! I also ended up finding my veil there as well.
To any bride-to-be, don’t forget that the most important thing about a wedding is getting to marry the man of your dreams.
I thought I would care a lot more about my dress and all the planning that went with it but when it came down to it, though I loved my dress, it’s not the star of the show.
The star is the two of you together, united in holy matrimony. I know, sounds cheesy, but it’s true!
Especially with COVID-19 and all of the uncertainty it brings, at the end of the day, the wedding is here and gone in a matter of hours and the thing that lasts the rest of your life is your marriage.
